In the midst of his political career in 1994, Portland-native Thomas Lauderdale became dissatisfied with the lackluster music at campaign events, spurring him to form Pink Martini — a little orchestra with big ambitions. Drawing inspiration from music from all over the world — crossing genres of classical, jazz, and old-fashioned pop — Pink Martini set out to provide beautiful and inclusive musical soundtracks for political fundraisers for causes such as civil rights, affordable housing, the environment, libraries, public broadcasting, education and parks. In 1995, Lauderdale recruited his Harvard classmate and revered singer/songwriter China Forbes to join Pink Martini. The dynamic team went on to craft some of the band's most enduring songs, including “Sympathique,” “Lilly,” “Clementine” and “Let’s Never Stop Falling in Love.”
Following their European debut at the Cannes Film Festival in 1997, Pink Martini released their debut album “Sympathique,” which received nominations for Song of the Year and Best New Artist in France’s Victoires de la Musique Awards in 2000. Pink Martini released “Hang On Little Tomato” in 2004, “Hey Eugene!” in 2007 and “Splendor In The Grass” in 2009. In November 2010, the band released “Joy To The World” — a festive, multi-denominational holiday album featuring songs from around the globe. All five albums have gone gold in France, Canada, Greece and Turkey. The band’s global outlook and multilingual repertoire have earned them international acclaim with over 3 million albums sold worldwide on their own independent label Heinz Records.
Twenty years after their inception, Pink Martini featuring China Forbes still tours the world, singing in 22 languages at opera houses, concert halls, film festivals, museums and fashion shows. In 2014, Pink Martini was inducted into both the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame and the Oregon Music Hall of Fame. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
