Virginia City
Take a trip back in time to this Victorian-era town when the west was wild and the rush for gold was full steam ahead. At its height, Virginia City was a bustling mining town of 25,000 residents and influenced the nation. By 1876, Nevada was the largest producer of gold and silver in the United States, flooding the world market and supporting Nevada during the American Civil War, and eventually qualifying Nevada for statehood.
This mining town has a rich history with the famous and infamous alike having lived or spent time here. It was the set of Louis L’Amour’s “Comstock Lode”, was visited many times by the Cartwright men in the fictitious show Bonanza, and historical figures such as Mark Twain, Ulysses S. Grant, Errol Flynn, Janis Joplin, the Grateful Dead (as well as many others) all have ties to Virginia City.
