Reno, Nev. – This past weekend, Grand Sierra Resort and Casino (GSR) hosted its third annual Grand Sierra Beer & Chili Festival, featuring the International Chili Society’s (ICS) 51st Annual World Championship Chili Cookoff, presented by Bush’s Beans. More than 11,000 people attended the event which featured 30 local and regional breweries, several hundred chili cooks, a local restaurant challenge presented by Yelp!, and the crowning of a new world champion. Clif Dugan of Dallas TX won the title of world champion and the $25,000 grand prize with his traditional red chili. Proceeds from the event benefited the local chapter of Make-A-Wish.

This year’s festival featured several local, regional and national breweries, competing for People’s Choice during both days of the event. Saturday’s People’s Choice winner was Belching Beaver Brewery of San Diego, Calif., while Sunday’s winner was Tonopah Brewing Company of Tonopah, Nev. The event also featured several local restaurants, competing for $1,000 donated to a charity of their choice and the coveted People’s Choice award. On Saturday, Stephen King of Bam! Dog Righteous Hot Dogs earned $1,000 for The Children’s Cabinet while Troy Donson of Sparks and Smoke BBQ, on Sunday, won $1,000 for the Northern Nevada Veteran’s Resource Center. Jay Rathmann of BJ’s BBQ took home two wins, receiving People’s Choice both days and tying with Sparks and Smoke on Sunday.

“We were incredibly excited to work with so many amazing local restaurants and breweries and to host an event that showcased their fantastic products,” said Erin Wootan, director of special events for Grand Sierra Resort. “This year’s participants, between breweries, restaurants and individual chili cooks, worked tirelessly for hours to create superb products to win the hearts of the crowds and the event judges and it made for a spectacular event.”
